You have your product and your marketing plan, and all you need are the product photos to go with it. You’ve been putting this off because choosing a product photographer can be a daunting task, and I get that! Don’t worry, I’m going to break down the top 5 things you need to look for when choosing a product photographer so you know you’re making the right choice.
1. Decide what style photography you are looking for
As photographers, there is generally a style that comes more naturally to each of us. For me, it’s the natural light, real life look. While I (and other photographers) are often capable of doing other styles if we have really mastered our trade, it’s always great to start with finding someone who you know can match the style you’re looking for!
2. Be sure they have a proven track record of producing quality work
Do your due diligence and check out their work! You can ask yourself a few questions to make sure you’re covering your bases: Is there a consistent quality within the images in their portfolio from brand to brand? Is there a cohesive look within the photography for a single brand? What are some of the brands that they have built trust with? Can you see examples of the style you determined you’re looking for within their portfolio?
If you are happy with the answers to these questions, you’re on the right track.
3. Confirm the products are the star in their photography.
Unfortunately, it’s common that product photography can be over propped and over done. This causes the consumers not to even be able to target what the actual product is that they are looking at. Be sure the product photographer you choose is going to help your product shine. The last thing you want is your product to just be another piece in a large scene of something “pretty”!
4. Be sure you are ready to make the investment.
You know what they say: you have to be willing to spend money to make money! We know running a business isn’t free, as much as we all wish it was. Getting a professional look takes time, resources, and money. While some imagery is better than no imagery, it’s best to wait and save till you have the money to invest in quality product photography. Don’t sell yourself short by hiring someone whose work you aren’t in love with just to get photography. I’d recommend making do with what you have for now and saving up to invest in product photography when you can afford it. Great product photography will help your product shine like it deserves to, and will make your business heart happy!
5. Determine what mediums you will use your imagery on.
A lot of professional product photographers will include usage rights in their services. (If they aren’t, they should be – it’s industry standard! Check out my post here about usage rights for more details on this.) It’s helpful to determine where you will need to use the images they provide before you speak with a photographer. This way, you can get an accurate quote and be sure you are covered to use the images where you need them.
At the end of the day, you want to choose a product photographer that you can trust. Whether your business is big or small, you want someone that you are sure will handle it with the utmost care. Pick a photographer that you can trust to represent your products to the best of their ability and in a way that will attract your ideal clients!
